Open source, free software, copyleft, GNU, free software: many terms are used in a certain confusion, and we will try to see them more clearly through this article.

The arrival of free software in the early 1980s was a strong reaction from the community of developers compared to commercial software with closed sources, ie software whose code cannot be studied and reused freely.

But Free does not necessarily mean free: there are non-free and paid “open source” software… hey yes, it’s not that simple!

At the origin of the movement of “ free software,” there is a man: Richard Matthew Stallman, alias RMS, who in the early 80s campaigned for free software. This philosophy is reflected in the historic GNU project, “GNOU” for short. The logo of this project is also a wildebeest head!

The idea behind Stallman‘s GNU project is to create a completely free and modifiable operating system without copyrights and without restriction on the use of source code.
